The study of Modern Foreign Languages is a lifelong skill which plays a vital role in our students’ education and future endeavours. It also develops cultural richness and awareness which contributes to a sense of global citizenship as well as the ability to understand and communicate in another language which is an important skill and ability for education and employment throughout the world. Our vision is that throughout a varied curriculum, students will develop transferable and invaluable skills which they will apply throughout their futures. The curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 Spanish in the content, culture and skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) taught with an emphasis on the three pillars of learning; Phonics, Grammar and Vocabulary. This is continued at KS4 where we follow the GCSE curriculum with AQA.

Year 7

Students will develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on phonics, pronunciation and conversational skills. They will also begin to learn about the Spanish speaking world and cultures.

Unit 1 –  Me Presento (With an emphasis on Spanish phonics)

An introduction to the Spanish language, allowing us to introduce ourselves and conduct small conversations to find out key information about ourselves and others.

Unit 2 –  Mi Burbuja (Continuing to work with Spanish phonics and devlopping grammar and vocabulary)

Developing Unit 1 by transferring key grammar and vocabulary to talk about yourself and others.

Unit 3 –  Mis Pasatiempos (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Using connectives and adjectives to further detail and link sentences to say what yourself and others do in their free time and their opinions on these activities.

Unit 4 –  Dónde vivo (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Developing understanding of the present tense to discuss where yourself and others live and using a wider range of adjectives to justify opinions and further detail responses.

Year 8

After first focusing on recapping and retrieving prior knowledge, students build upon basic grammar, listening, reading, writing and speaking skills and begin to develop these in a more creative and communicative manner. Students explore many cultural aspects of Spain and the Spanish language.

Unit 1 –  En mi ciudad (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

An opportunity to retrieve prior knowledge from the end of year 7 about where you live and to build on this by using the imperfect tense and conditional tense to discuss more complex opinions about your local area, considering alternate points of view.

Unit 3 –  Vacaciones (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Consolidating understanding of a range of past, present and future tenses to narrate holidays.

  • Using future and conditional tenses to discuss plans for upcoming and ideal holidays

Unit 4 –  La comida (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Using grammatical understanding of past, present and future tenses to discuss your eating preferences and habits.

  • What you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner using past and future tenses

  • Food from Hispanic countries

Year 9

Developing opinions and views and gaining a deeper understanding of Spanish grammar. These will then be consolidated through reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Unit 1 –  Retrieval, Me, my family and friends (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Retrieving the holidays topic from last year to talk about summer activities and retrieve the use of past, present and future tenses. Talking about ourselves, our families and relationships with some development into future plans.

Unit 2 –  Free time (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Unit 3 –  Hispanic culture and cuisine (Continuing to develop grammar, vocabulary and phonics)

Learning about the Hispanic world, in particular cuisine and festivals. Linking topic with grammar.

  • Talking about festivals within the Hispanic world and the history behind them.

Year 10

After coverage of the National Curriculum and developing reading, listening, reading and writing skills with in depth knowledge of the Spanish grammar, students will follow the GCSE course to further develop their skills and knowledge of the language.

An opportunity to retrieve prior knowledge from year 8 with high-level language and deeper understanding of grammar. Developing conversational ‘holiday’ Spanish.

Talking about where we live and debating the pros and cons to city versus countryside living.

Consolidating understanding of a range of past, present and future tenses to narrate global issues and our role within helping them.

Year 11

After first focusing on skills and grammar through GCSE curriculum topics, Year 11 focusses on current studies and future plans as they begin o think about life after High School and prepare for their GCSE examinations.
