Teaching and Learning

Class groups

As you weren’t able to sit your SATS, you will initially be placed in class groups for the first term. This is to allow us to assess your ability and see which teaching group will suit you best. Throughout the first term, you will be assessed through both tests and your classwork, so it is important to work hard and show your teachers your true potential.

Unlike primary school, you won’t be in the same classroom all day. There is a two week timetable and lessons last one hour; a bell will indicate that it is time to change lesson. You will travel around the school to different classrooms to be taught a variety of subjects by different teachers. Don’t worry about getting lost (we all do when we first start!) as there are staff on corridors and on the yard during lesson changeover. You will carry your books and equipment in a school bag so it is important to be organised and ensure you take time each evening to pack the items you need. For example, you only have to bring your PE kit on the days you have PE. Look at the tasks section and use the example timetable to practise packing your bag each day.

The subjects taught at St Bede’s are:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • RE
  • History
  • Geography
  • Spanish
  • Design Technology
  • PE
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Art
  • Computing

Similar to primary school, you will be expected to complete homework to help with your learning. A homework timetable will be issued so you know what homework to expect each night. St Bede’s uses an online system called ‘Show My Homework’ where all your homework is uploaded; a login and password will be given out when you start in September.
