The Art department ignites creativity and guides students to explore different areas of Art and be open to work in new mediums and styles.

Year 7

Year 7 Art students undertake a single hour of Art each week. All topics covered focus initially on working from observation of primary or secondary sources. Throughout the year, students work from a selection of mixed media experiments to illustrative and 3 Dimensional products. The focus is on the Formal Elements of Tone, Line, Texture and Form then Colour, Shape and Pattern. Artists include Hannah Davies,  LS Lowry and Patrick Caulfield  Working in the arts helps learners to develop creative problem-solving skills. The arts provide challenges for learners at all levels. Art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world which can be evident in their portfolio of work.

Term 1: Into the Wild

  •  Intricate patterns and colour theory elements through the shapes of bugs and insects
  • Sgraffito bugs
  • Understanding of depth and composition
  • Using pencil tones correctly
  • Experiment with collage aspects
  • Experiment with water colour paints and fine liner combinations
  • Mythical Creatures and hybrid elements
  • Animal skins
  • Use a range if different mediums such as watercolour, coloured pencils and pencil tones.
  • Create detail with Fineliner mark making
  • A mythical creature of your own

Term 2: Perspective

  • Understanding the rule of successful perspective drawings
  • Single point perspective
  • Two-point perspective
  • A range of blending techniques through pastel mediums
  • Looking at composition, colour and shape.
  • Creating work in the style of Artist LS Lowry

Term 3: Man Made

  • Draw, photograph and paint still life arrangements of plastic vessels
  • Inspiration of artist Patrick Caulfield work
  • Investigate and analyse Patrick Caulfield’s work
  • Experiment with paint from a Pop Art style

Additional Information

Year 7 students will be selected to work on achieving an Arts Award through extra- curricular activities in Art and Design.

Creative Arts nights to be held in the summer to provide an opportunity for Arts Award students to showcase both their talents and efforts through an Arts exhibition.

Year 8

Year 8 Art students undertake a single hour of Art each week. All topics covered focus initially on working from observation of primary or secondary sources. Throughout the year, students work from a selection of mixed media experiments to Graphic Design, Fine Art, Mixed Media and Illustrations. The focus is on the Formal Elements and Tone, Line, Texture and Form then Colour, Shape and Pattern. Artists include Julian Opie and Yellena James. .  Later in the year we look at creative 3 dimensional surface patterns and soft sculptures in the style of Artist Lucy Sparrow. Creating an banquet style installation piece from mini food items from the whole contribution of the year.

Term 1: Portraiture

  • Will understand proportions of the face
  • How to explore self-image and identity
  • Using various photoshop functions
  • Learn the gird method
  • Scaling up of images explored
  • Colour theory and application of colour blending

Term 2: Under The Sea

  • Understand positive and negative space and apply with own work
  • Re-create work through collage
  • Gain understanding and knowledge in drawing techniques to create sea life
  • Will learn how to present their best work to a high standard

Term 3: Bede’s Banquet

  • Understand the basics of stitching techniques and various stitching methods
  • Expand knowledge of artist and work in a 3 dimensional process.
  • Will know how to paint and understand manufacturing techniques to create products.
  • Collaboratively to accomplish a banquet for all food categories.

Year 9

Year 9 Art students undertake a single hour of Art each week. All topics covered focus initially on working from a previous GCSE Art question selected from the exam board. Throughout the year, students work from a selection of mixed media experiments including Graphic Design, Fine Art, Mixed Media, Illustrations, textiles and Photography areas. The focus is on the Formal Elements of Tone, Line, Texture and Form then Colour, Shape, Pattern, Scale and Graphic products. Artists include Tim Burton, Wangechi Mutu and Jennifer Blakeley.  Later in the year we look at hyper realism art through the works of CJ Hendry through a range of mixed media studies.  Students to work within a GCSE style concept of learning for students to wish to take GCSE as their options students to use and develop skeleton portfolio started in year 9.

By the end of Key Stage 3 pupils will have been taught a wide range of techniques and skills that will prepare them for the Key Stage 4 GCSE course

Term 1: Monster

  • Pupils will explore alter-ego portraits
  • Understand the characteristics of Tim Burton style of drawings
  • Will understand what is meant by hybrid
  • Will deepen their understanding of what /makes a monster
  • Explore stitch techniques

Term 2: Creative Landscape

  • Understand the basics of a DSLR camera
  • Pupils to expand knowledge within photography
  • Explore digital editing
  • Will gain knowledge and understanding of how to use a variety of photoshop functions
  • Will create own book and present best edits

Term 3: The Big Draw

  • Gaining knowledge in drawing and still life
  • Understanding to refine skills
  • Refining mixed media on different surfaces
  • Work in a different range of materials
  • Gain knowledge of GCSE units and what course entails
  • Experiment with new techniques mediums

Selection of students to attend Photography club. Work on industry level DSLR cameras and how to take and edit photographs for advertisement and commercial purposes.

Year 10

Term 1-2: Teacher led project

Pupils will be guided to explore and variety of media and techniques. Including: Batuque, stitch, drawing, print making, photography and digital Art.

  • Along their journey they will research a variety of Artists.
  • Explore a variety of media and techniques
  • understand how to write effective annotation
  • Importance of drawing
  • Bringing together ideas to create a personalised outcome.

Term 2-3: Individual extended project

Pupils will select their own project from a selection of titles.  They will then develop their ideas independently embedding their skills they previously learnt from previous teacher led project.

Will produce a personalised and thorough investigation of their chosen title.

  • Along their journey they will select and research a variety of Artists that are relevant to chosen title.
  • Explore a variety of media and techniques that are relevant to their title.
  • Record ideas and insights through effective annotation
  • Pupils continue to develop their drawing skills to demonstrate development of ideas.
  • Bringing together ideas to create a personalised outcome.

Year 11

Term 1: Consolidate extended project.

Pupils complete both projects and develop their personalised title as needed.

Pupils will be given the opportunity to attend stand-alone workshops on skills and techniques they might not of had the opportunity to experience so far.

For example: sewing machines, clay, screen printing, lino cuts and sculpture.

We have close links with Herbert Parkinson, Crown paints and Teal. pupils are able to get involved  with specialised projects for these companies.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Art Club lunch time and after schools for all years.

Art club afterschool – feel free to explore a range of new skills which will be for larger projects around the school

  • Liverpool – Walker Gallery / Tate.
  • London Visit – Tate Modern / National portrait gallery / Street Art
