Religious Studies is taught to all students at St. Bede’s. The schemes of work are based upon the Religious Education Curriculum Directory (2012) agreed by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales. In KS3 pupils are developed on the different skills needed in Religious Education which is to investigate, challenge and question.

In year 10 & 11 the GCSE course followed is Edexcel Specification A, which has three areas of study:

Catholic Christianity – beliefs and teachings, practices, sources of authority and the expression of faith through art, architecture, music and drama. (50%)

Judaism – beliefs, teachings and practices. (25%)

Philosophy and Ethics – arguments for the existence of God and religious teachings on relationships and families in the twenty-first century. (25%)

Year 7 - Investigating Religion

Unit 1 – Our Catholic Community

Who are Catholics? Introduction to the Church hierarchy, denominational Christianity, the Sacraments, the Saints, liturgical year including Advent & Christmas.

Unit 2What is the Bible?

Unit 3What is Lent?

The events leading up to Jesus’ death, how Catholics celebrate this today including Lent, Holy Week and the work of CAFOD.

Unit 4Who am I?

Theories of creation, self and conscience, free will, determinism, imago dei and stewardship.

Unit 5Investigating Faith

Year 8 - Challenging Religion

Unit 1 –  Revealing God to a godless world

The context of the Old Testament, God’s formation of a people, the birth of justice

Unit 2 –  What is Judaism?
